Largest Fire in Texas History; Over One Million Hectares Burned

A widespread fire that has spread to over one million hectares in the Texas Panhandle in just four days has now become the largest wildfire in the state's history. Firefighters continuing their efforts to contain the blaze hoped to benefit from the winter weather conditions on Thursday, March 1, and the snow that has fallen across the region. Britta Merwin, a meteorologist for Fox, states, 'When it comes to wildfires, rain is helpful, but snow is excellent. It acts like a fire extinguisher. It moistens the area and can really put out the fire.' So far, one body has been found in the Hutchinson area north of Amarillo, but the cause of death has not been announced. Dozens of buildings in this area have been damaged amid the flames. The fire in the Texas Panhandle has engulfed over 1.25 million hectares, leading to evacuations, road closures, and a state of emergency. Stephen Morgan, a meteorologist for Fox, says, 'This fire is nearly 300 kilometers wide.' The width of Delaware is about 150 kilometers. Fire officials lifted the evacuation order for the city of Canadian yesterday but warned that the fire could spread further. The wildfires have not only forced residents to seek safe local areas but have also created tall columns of smoke in the Panhandle region and among its plains. Wind forecasts indicate that the fire could spread toward Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Minnesota, and western Wisconsin. The extensive fire in the Paveh forests comes just days after the extinguishing of the Marivan forest fires. Wildfires in Canada have forced residents of a 20,000-person city to leave their homes. Flames have engulfed the Paveh forests; the fire has reignited under the ashes. Open data from Iran indicates that 21,000 hectares of the country's forests and pastures burn annually.
