Latest Reports on the Control of Unprecedented Widespread Fires in Israel

Israeli media have reported that although the widespread and unprecedented fires in the country have largely been contained, firefighters are still battling flames in certain areas. On Sunday, December 7, the fires entered their sixth day, affecting areas around Jerusalem. According to Haaretz, hundreds of spots were still burning in the hills of Jerusalem early Sunday, but flames in the northern part of the country have largely been contained. The Israeli Prime Minister stated on Sunday that 'the fight against the fire, which created a complex and difficult situation, is still ongoing.' Hundreds of thousands of Israelis were evacuated from their homes during the fires, with nearly 600 homes reported completely burned. Severe damage has also been inflicted on thousands of homes, farms, forests, and public and private facilities. Despite approximately 200 people suffering minor injuries, no fatalities have been reported from the fire. The most extensive fires have been reported in the city of Haifa and its surrounding settlements in the Carmel foothills in northern Israel. Israeli media state that 35 suspects have been identified in connection with the fires, and the detention of 23 of them has been extended for further questioning. Some of the detainees are Arab citizens of Israel, while others are Palestinians from the West Bank, but the Israeli police chief stated on Sunday that a detailed statement would not be issued for 'specific reasons.' The Israeli army has indicated that some of the detainees were responsible for throwing Molotov cocktails towards the forests and farms around the settlements, from where the flames spread to homes and facilities. According to Israeli media, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed during his cabinet meeting on Sunday, December 7, that 'these fires are worse than the attacks and sabotage of the past year, and dealing with the perpetrators should be commensurate with the severity of the situation.' Netanyahu also stated that 'the most assistance' would be allocated to those who have lost their homes and properties. However, Israeli media report complaints from victims who are frustrated with the bureaucratic processes and the 'humiliating' amount of compensation determined. On Friday, Netanyahu expressed gratitude in a phone call to Mahmoud Abbas, the leader of the Palestinian Authority, for the Palestinian fire department sending vehicles and firefighters to assist Israel. Netanyahu publicly requested help from the international community to extinguish the widespread fires on Wednesday. In this context, the largest American firefighting plane began operations in Israel last Friday. Assistance has come from neighboring Arab countries, including Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, Jordan, and Egypt, as well as from European countries ranging from Russia to France, which have sent firefighters and advanced equipment to help Israel.
