Launch of the 'National Dialogue' Conference in Syria from March 7

New Syrian officials announced that they will hold a 'National Dialogue Conference' starting on February 25 (March 7) to discuss the future of the country. This decision comes as Syria has been embroiled in civil war and political, economic, and social crises for over a decade. According to Reuters, two members of the preliminary committee for this conference stated that the committee has consulted with about 4,000 people across Syria in the past week to gather various perspectives on drafting a constitutional declaration, a new economic framework, and a plan for institutional reforms. This seven-member committee will play a central role in preparing for these discussions. Since 2011, Syria has been in a civil war, during which Bashar al-Assad's government has been engaged with opposition groups, including armed rebels and extremist factions. These conflicts have resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions. In recent years, following the recapture of large areas of Syrian territory by government forces, discussions regarding political reforms and reconstruction have intensified. In previous years, the Syrian government, under international and domestic pressures, claimed to have taken some actions for political reforms, but many opposition groups deemed these efforts insufficient and lacking legitimacy. On the other hand, Western economic sanctions against the Syrian government have led to a severe economic crisis that has significantly impacted people's livelihoods. On December 8, 2024, the Bashar al-Assad government was overthrown following a rapid ten-day advance by opposition forces led by Ahmad al-Shara, who has since taken over as the interim leader of Syria. Ahmad al-Shara was appointed as the head of the transitional government and responsible for forming a new legislative council in Syria on January 30. Currently, the transitional government is managing Syria until the beginning of March. The Syrian constitution is now suspended, and the current parliament has also been dissolved. According to state media reports, the new legislative council will continue its duties until a new constitution is ratified. The holding of this conference could be an important step towards structural changes in Syria's political and economic system. However, it remains unclear whether various groups, including political opponents and civil society representatives, will participate in these discussions. Additionally, the effectiveness of this conference in bringing about real and practical reforms in the country will depend on how its outcomes are implemented and how they are accepted by various domestic and foreign parties. The holding of this meeting comes at a time when internal crises, economic sanctions, and the presence of foreign forces in Syria continue to pose major challenges for the country's officials.
