Launch of Two New Ballistic Missiles; Rising Tensions Between North Korea and the U.S. and Its Allies

Japan's Ministry of Defense reported that North Korea fired two ballistic missiles towards the east of the Korean Peninsula on Tuesday, which fell into waters outside Japan's economic zone. According to Reuters, the U.S. military confirmed the ballistic missile launches and stated that these launches do not pose a threat to the U.S. or its allies, but they affirm the 'destabilizing' impact of North Korea's weapons program. Concurrently, following the recent test of the intercontinental ballistic missile Hwasong-18 by North Korea and the defection of an American soldier to North Korea, a new wave of tensions is forming in the Far East region. Earlier, the U.S., Japan, and South Korea issued a joint statement declaring that North Korea's intercontinental ballistic missile test is a 'violation' of multiple United Nations resolutions and constitutes a 'threat to peace and stability' in the region. In this joint statement, North Korea was urged to cease its illegal actions and return to the negotiating table. Following the test of the Hwasong-18 intercontinental ballistic missile by North Korea, state media in the country announced that the launch of this missile—which forms the core of North Korea's nuclear strike force—serves as a warning to the U.S. and other enemies of Pyongyang. The White House expressed concern over the continuation of North Korea's missile tests. In response to North Korea's missile launch, the U.S. held a joint naval exercise with its Asian allies. The U.S., Japan, and South Korea condemned North Korea's ballistic missile launch, indicating that tensions between Pyongyang and the U.S. and its allies are escalating. The U.S. also deployed nuclear-capable bombers over the Korean Peninsula.
