Law to Expel Family Members of 'Terrorists' from Israeli Territory Approved

The Israeli parliament has passed a law granting the Minister of Interior the authority to expel family members of individuals who engage in terrorist activities against Israel and its citizens. This law, approved in the early hours of Thursday, November 8, includes first-degree relatives of a potential terrorist with Israeli citizenship. Parents, siblings, children, spouses, or partners of a terrorist will be expelled if they were aware of the individual's intent to commit terrorist acts and did not take action to prevent it, such as reporting to security agencies, or if they are fundamentally supportive of such anti-Israeli actions. 61 members of the Knesset supported the law, while 41 voted against it. The draft law was presented by Hanokh Milovidsky, a member of the Likud party, which is led by Benjamin Netanyahu. The Minister of Interior has the authority to expel an individual suspected of supporting terrorism among the families of perpetrators of sabotage after a hearing session. The expulsion will take place within 14 days following the hearing. The accused may be expelled for seven to a maximum of 15 years to the Gaza Strip or another location, but if the expelled individual is a legal resident without citizenship, the exile will last from 10 to 20 years. The law to expel first-degree relatives of individuals committing terrorist acts was passed amid the ongoing war between Israel and armed Palestinian groups in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and during the crisis of direct military attacks between Iran and Israel. Over the course of the 13-month war, several Israelis have been killed in multiple attacks by Palestinians from the West Bank or Israeli Arabs. However, some of the attackers were Palestinians, including those born in Gaza, who in previous years gained the right to live or citizenship due to marriage to an Israeli Arab or having first-degree kinship with a Palestinian resident of Israel. Thousands of Israelis protested on Wednesday night for the second consecutive night against the expulsion of Yoav Galant from the Ministry of Defense by order of Benjamin Netanyahu, deeming the appointment of a politician without a military and security background to this position dangerous for their country. Prime Minister Netanyahu unexpectedly announced on Tuesday night that his disagreement with Yoav Galant had reached a point that undermined the necessary trust for cooperation between the two parties, and everyone was aware of these disagreements. Since the announcement of this order, many Israelis, along with the families of 101 Israeli citizens still held hostage by the extremist group Hamas in Gaza, have protested in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa, and several other cities. However, these protests seem to be ineffective in the process of changes in the political cadre of the government. Yoav Galant revealed in his media presence that he had fundamental disagreements with Benjamin Netanyahu on three main issues: every Israeli citizen of conscription age should serve without exception, the return of kidnapped Israeli hostages should be a priority, and a national inquiry commission should be established regarding the country's failure to be aware of the Hamas extremist group's attack on October 7 of last year. Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed the Israeli Minister of Defense from his position. In recent days, he has also stated that significant military achievements obtained in the ongoing war should be transformed into a diplomatic agreement to ensure military and security stability, while Benjamin Netanyahu insists on continuing the war. Polls conducted by Kan and Channel 12 television networks one day after Mr. Galant's dismissal showed that a significant majority of Israelis are deeply concerned that these governmental changes occurred amid the war. Most participants in the polls stated that they distrust Yisrael Katz, whom Benjamin Netanyahu appointed to the Ministry of Defense, as he has no security or military background. Additionally, most respondents, including supporters of the ruling Likud party, said that Netanyahu's goal in dismissing Yoav Galant was merely to maintain the coalition of the Likud party with other parties in the government. Leaders of religious parties have warned Benjamin Netanyahu that young religious men must continue to be exempt from service as before, regardless of the ongoing war, or else the stability of the fragile government coalition will be jeopardized. Mr. Galant, military leaders, and most Israelis find the continued exemption of religious men from military service while men from other classes are participating in the war and being killed intolerable.
