Lawyers of Imran Khan Protest His Prison Conditions

As Khan's legal team prepares to appeal his embezzlement conviction, one of his lawyers stated on Monday, August 7, after visiting him, that Khan is held in a small, filthy cell. Imran Khan, a former cricket champion who is now 70 years old, has been at the center of political turmoil in Pakistan since he was ousted from the premiership last year by a parliamentary no-confidence vote. As Pakistan grapples with an economic crisis, the past year's turmoil has raised concerns about stability in this nuclear-armed country. On Saturday, police arrested Khan at his home in Lahore and transferred him to a prison in the Attock region near Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. The court found him guilty of embezzlement and illegally selling state gifts, sentencing him to three years in prison. Naim Panjota, one of Khan's lawyers, stated that he met with him for less than two hours, prepared the necessary documents for the case, and filed an appeal against the court's ruling. He noted that Khan is in a small cell with 'an open toilet that is filled with flies during the day and insects at night.' According to him, Khan is imprisoned in a 'third-class' facility. Panjota told reporters in Islamabad that Khan's legal team had requested better conditions for him in prison. Political prisoners in Pakistan have the right to better 'second-class' facilities, including access to television, newspapers, and books. The government spokesperson and prison officials have not responded to repeated requests for comments on Khan's detention conditions. The embezzlement conviction likely means that Khan will be disqualified from participating in the general elections scheduled for November. He has claimed that the court ruling is politically motivated. Following Khan's conflict with Pakistan's powerful military and a split in his party, his trial and imprisonment dealt another blow to his political standing. Since his ousting, Khan has been striving for early elections. He accuses the military and his political opponents of conspiring against him to prevent his participation in the elections. Violent protests by his supporters on May 9 escalated tensions with the military. The military, which has held power in Pakistan for half of its history since its formation, denies these accusations. It is expected that Shehbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, will call for the dissolution of parliament this week, paving the way for general elections by November. The addition of a political crisis to the existing economic crisis in Pakistan has heightened global concerns about stability in this nuclear-armed country.
