Leaders of North and South Korea Meet

Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, crossed the border between the two Koreas on foot on Friday, May 7, and met with Moon Jae-in, the President of South Korea. Reports indicate that Kim Jong Un entered South Korean territory at 9:30 AM local time by passing through the demilitarized zone. The South Korean president officially welcomed Kim Jong Un. He is the first North Korean leader to step onto South Korean soil in nearly seven decades since the division of the Korean Peninsula. The North Korean leader thanked the South Korean president for hosting this historic visit in the border village of Panmunjom. After the official welcoming ceremony, a summit between the two Korean leaders was held. Before the negotiations began, Kim Jong Un stated, 'We are at the starting line of a new historical era, peace, and prosperity in relations between the two Koreas.' Reports indicate that the North Korean leader expressed his readiness for honest discussions regarding current issues between the two Koreas and emphasized that past failures in implementing agreements should not be repeated. Kim Jong Un's sister was also present at the negotiation table. According to the Associated Press, Kim Yo Jong, who previously visited South Korea during the Olympics, has now become one of the important figures in the North Korean government. The first meeting of the two leaders reportedly concluded at noon local time in the border village of Panmunjom, and Kim Jong Un returned to North Korea. A second meeting is scheduled for Friday afternoon in the same village. South Korea has stated that the goal of this summit is to end the confrontation between the two countries over North Korea's nuclear program. Bloomberg previously reported that the North Korean government is close to producing missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads that could target U.S. cities. It is estimated that North Korea possesses 60 nuclear bombs. Meanwhile, the Trump administration has intensified economic sanctions against North Korea and warned that if the country continues to threaten the U.S., military action will be taken against it. The head of the South Korean presidential office and the person responsible for preparing the summit told reporters on Thursday, 'This summit will focus solely on stopping nuclear activities and policies related to achieving lasting peace.' He added that it is difficult to predict exactly what agreement will result from this summit. Reports released before the summit began indicate that the leaders of the two Koreas may sign a peace statement to replace the 1953 armistice agreement. Since the two countries have not yet signed a peace agreement, they are technically still at war. Additionally, there may be agreements on the gradual withdrawal of forces from both sides along the border and strategies for continuing negotiations, nuclear inspections, and lifting sanctions. None of the previous negotiations regarding nuclear inspections and lifting sanctions between the two countries have been successful.
