According to a news announcement on Leonard Cohen's Facebook page, the Canadian-born songwriter, composer, and renowned poet has passed away at the age of 82. In a statement released on Facebook, it was said, "With endless sorrow, we announce the news that Leonard Cohen, the legendary poet, songwriter, and artist, has passed away." The statement continues, "We have lost one of the greatest and most celebrated dreamers of the music world." No details regarding the cause of death or other specifics were mentioned in the statement. However, it also stated that a memorial service would be held in Los Angeles, where he had resided in recent years. Cohen was born in Westmount (Montreal) in Quebec, Canada, on September 21, 1934, to a Jewish family. His paternal family had Polish roots, and his father passed away when he was just 9 years old. At the age of 31, he moved to New York and became a resident of the United States. Cohen is regarded as one of the most influential songwriters and composers of contemporary music; his influence and fame extended beyond America and Canada, gaining widespread recognition in countries like Iran as well. Several famous and lesser-known singers and groups have covered some of the songs he wrote or composed. It is said that he wrote one of his famous songs, "Hallelujah," over five years. He is a member of the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame," alongside figures like Bob Dylan, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature this year. It is noted that elements such as romantic dreams, religion, and politics hold a special place in Cohen's work, and he was among the few songwriters and composers who were recognized as poets in their own right, apart from their musical endeavors.
