Letter to Salehi for 'Presentation of Confidential Documents' of the Agreement to the JCPOA Commission

Ibrahim Karkhani, a member of the Special Commission of the Islamic Consultative Assembly for examining the nuclear agreement, announced a letter from the head of this commission to the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran requesting the 'presentation of confidential documents' related to this agreement. On Saturday, September 28, Mr. Karkhani told the Fars news agency that Alireza Zakani, the head of the Special Commission of the Assembly, had asked Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of the Atomic Energy Organization, to provide the 'confidential documents' related to the comprehensive nuclear agreement between Iran and the 1+5 to this commission. The member of the Special Commission for examining the nuclear agreement added: 'This action is in line with more thorough investigations of the JCPOA {nuclear agreement} so that the representatives of the people can examine the dimensions of the JCPOA more carefully after being informed of all aspects of the agreement, to ensure that hidden layers of this agreement do not impose additional commitments on our country.' Previously, Mahmoud Nabavian, another member of the Special Commission for examining the JCPOA in the Assembly, had also announced that this commission intends to discuss and examine not only the text of the nuclear agreement but also the related confidential documents. It seems that the reference of these members of the Islamic Consultative Assembly is to an agreement signed alongside Iran's nuclear agreement with global powers, between the Islamic Republic and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which specifies how this agency inspects Iran's nuclear program and its facilities. Both the U.S. government, the Iranian government, and the IAEA state that this agreement is confidential; however, several members of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, the U.S. Congress, and nuclear security experts are calling for the details to be disclosed. The IAEA is responsible for verifying Iran's nuclear program. This agency, under the United Nations, must also comment on some suspicious actions of the Islamic Republic's nuclear program in the past. Mr. Zakani had also recently requested in a separate letter to Mohammad Javad Zarif, the Iranian Foreign Minister, to arrange for his presence in the Islamic Consultative Assembly during the upcoming visit of Yukiya Amano, the Secretary-General of the IAEA. In this context, the continuation of the work of the Special Commission of the JCPOA in the Assembly is ongoing despite Obama's victory over Congress, and there are intensive negotiations between Tehran and Moscow for the transfer of enriched uranium to Russia.
