List of Powerful Women in Canada Released; Three Iranian Women Among the Honorees

The list of one hundred powerful women in Canada for the year 2023 was published by the Women Executive Network (WXN). This year, the names of three Iranian-Canadian women are included: Leili Pourzand, a women's rights activist; Atefeh Mashatan, a university professor; and Atousa Mahmoudpour, a lawyer. The Women Executive Network has recognized these women as individuals who have achieved significant accomplishments in their fields and have contributed to the advancement of women's roles. The network's website states: 'They are rising stars. They are at the top of their field. They are advocates and champions for others. They are community leaders. They are both teachers and learners. They inspire others. They are pioneers for future generations. This is what truly makes the most powerful women in Canada powerful, not their position or job title.' Atefeh Mashatan is listed in the 'Leaders' section, representing women over 40 who not only exemplify great leadership but also instill confidence and support in others. Dr. Atefeh (Ati) Mashatan is a professor at Metropolitan University of Toronto and a cybersecurity expert. She is recognized as a prominent figure in this field and was recently named one of the top 20 women in cybersecurity in Canada for her efforts in advancing cybersecurity research and training skilled personnel. Atousa Mahmoudpour and Leili Pourzand are listed in the 'Brave Women' section, aimed at recognizing women who courageously and compassionately defend Canada and its values across a wide spectrum, even at the risk of their jobs, reputations, and in some cases, their lives. Atousa Mahmoudpour, a lawyer, wife, mother, and dedicated women's rights activist, decided to travel to her homeland during her professional career to express her views and work towards empowering women, even at personal risk. She has since returned to Canada and continues to be a leading example. Leili Pourzand came to Canada as a refugee from Iran at the age of 24 after graduating from law school. She continued her education in women's studies and graduated in feminism and law. Ms. Pourzand provides services to women, children, and immigrants, and is considered a leader in the social services sector in York Region. She began sharing her life experiences in the media two years ago to highlight the challenges and courage of women. The Women Executive Network has been recognizing the 'incredible achievements and performances' of powerful Canadian women since 2003 (1382) by publishing this list. To date, the network has selected 1,628 women from various fields and has introduced the community to powerful women in Canada through its annual list.
