Lloyd Austin during visit to USS Ford: We will not allow the war in Gaza to turn into a 'regional conflict'

On Wednesday, December 20, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin visited the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford, thanking the crew for their role in preventing the escalation of conflict in the Middle East during the Israel-Hamas war. Austin stated, "This ship and its crew are making history. Sometimes our greatest achievement is preventing evil from occurring. And at times of great tension in the region, all of you have been the main factor in preventing a broader regional conflict." The U.S. Secretary of Defense emphasized that one of the goals of the United States is to "ensure that the Gaza crisis does not turn into a regional conflict, and I believe we have managed it well." It is unclear how long the Ford will remain in the Eastern Mediterranean and whether it will return to its home port in Virginia before Israel transitions from intense battles in Gaza to a more limited phase of war aimed at eliminating Hamas. The nuclear-powered USS Ford is a small floating city that accommodates over four thousand personnel and eight squadrons of aircraft. Following the terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7, it became a powerful symbol of U.S. resolve in supporting Israel. According to Reuters, the U.S. Secretary of Defense has extended the deployment of the Ford in the Mediterranean waters three times so far and hopes that its presence will deter the Islamic Republic and its aligned groups—especially Hezbollah in Lebanon—from joining the war against Israel. Amid international protests over the high civilian casualties in Gaza, Austin discussed plans for the ship's relocation with Israeli leaders in Tel Aviv on Monday, December 18. He also mentioned the potential for a reduction in the intensity of the war in Gaza and its impact on the regional conflict, stating, "If that happens, it is reasonable to expect a reduction in activities." The United States and its partners are currently working to deter allies of the Islamic Republic in Iran, who are attempting to impose costs on Israel and the U.S. in Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen. In Iraq and Syria, U.S. forces have been targeted by drone and missile attacks from Iran-backed militias. Iran-aligned Houthis in Yemen have disrupted global trade with drone and missile attacks on commercial tankers and container ships in the Red Sea. On Tuesday, December 19, Austin announced the establishment of a maritime security initiative to respond to these attacks and convened a meeting with over 40 defense ministers, urging their participation. Britain and Italy have expressed readiness to help counter the destabilizing activities of the Houthis in the region. London has agreed to send a Royal Navy ship to the Red Sea for an international operation to protect the free flow of trade under U.S. leadership. The Italian Ministry of Defense also announced on Tuesday that its navy would dispatch one of its frigates in the coming hours to help protect shipping routes in the Red Sea from Houthi attacks. Meanwhile, U.S. and Israeli officials say the deployment of the Ford shortly after the start of the Hamas-Israel war sent an important message to Hezbollah, warning the group about the costs of opening a new front against Israel. However, experts say tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border remain high, and Israel is concerned about a potential ground invasion in its north.
