London Fire; Police Report Possible Death Toll Rising to 58

British police indicate that the death toll from the Grenfell Tower fire in London may have reached 58. According to Reuters, if confirmed, this would mark the deadliest incident in London since World War II. On Sunday, Reuters quoted Stuart Cundy, the London police commander, stating that it can be assumed that all 58 individuals reported missing at the time of the fire are presumed dead. In a press conference at the fire scene, the London police commander also mentioned that this number includes 30 individuals whose deaths had already been reported. Meanwhile, the Independent reported that this senior British police official did not rule out the possibility that some of the missing individuals may be safe but, 'for reasons, do not wish to inform us.' The London police commander also stated that the death toll may change as more information becomes available. According to the Associated Press, police are still searching Grenfell Tower for remaining individuals, although London emergency services do not expect to find any more survivors in the building. The report indicates that 16 bodies have been recovered from the building so far, the first being a young 23-year-old Syrian refugee. On Saturday, police stated that their investigation into the cause of the fire will include examining the building's renovation process in 2016 and will conduct inquiries if 'evidence is found.' The Associated Press also reported that 19 individuals injured in the incident remain hospitalized, with 10 in critical condition. In this context, the British Prime Minister met with the victims of the London fire following increasing criticism.
