London Police Arrest Dozens to Prevent Clashes Between Pro-Palestinian Supporters and Opposing Groups

Reuters reported that over one hundred thousand pro-Palestinian supporters marched in central London on Saturday, November 11, and police arrested more than 80 individuals in an effort to prevent clashes between them and opposing groups. The pro-Palestinian march coincided with the anniversary of the end of World War I, which is annually commemorated with ceremonies honoring British lives lost in the war. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated that holding a march on the anniversary of the end of World War I was disrespectful, and his ministers called for the cancellation of the march, which was the largest pro-Palestinian demonstration in London to date. British police reported that a 'significant number' of counter-protesters, described by Reuters as right-wing protesters, were present near the war memorial in central London, but police clashed with them after some began throwing bottles at the marchers. The London police later announced that in an effort to maintain peace, they arrested 82 individuals before they could approach the pro-Palestinian march. Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, accused the Home Secretary of emboldening the far-right, as the Home Office had previously accused the police of supporting 'pro-Palestinian supporters.' Khan wrote on social media: 'The scenes of disorder we witnessed from the far-right are a direct result of the Home Secretary's words.' According to the report, some pro-Palestinian supporters chanted 'From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,' a slogan that Jews consider anti-Semitic and a call for the eradication of Israel. Militants from the Hamas group, which is financially and militarily supported by the Islamic Republic, attacked Israel on October 6, killing over 1,400 people, most of whom were civilians. They also took over 240 individuals, including children, women, and the elderly, as hostages. In response to this attack, Israel besieged Gaza and began air, sea, and ground assaults on Hamas targets in Gaza. The United States, the UK, the European Union, Japan, Israel, and several other countries have designated Hamas as a terrorist organization. Israel captured 11 Hamas bases; clashes occurred around the Shifa Hospital in the heart of Gaza. Israeli forces attacked Hezbollah military infrastructure in southern Lebanon. The Israeli army stated: 'Since the beginning of ground operations in Gaza, we have attacked 5,000 Hamas targets.' Netanyahu's response to Macron's criticism: 'Do not condemn Israel; the responsibility for civilian casualties in Gaza lies with Hamas.'
