London Police Arrest Man with Several Knives on Suspicion of Terrorism

London police say they have arrested a 27-year-old man carrying several large knives near the Houses of Parliament as part of an ongoing 'counter-terrorism operation.' According to the Associated Press, no one was injured in this incident, which occurred just a few meters from the site of last month's attack where five people were killed by a vehicle and knife assault. However, this area of London, which has been on edge since the March 22 attack, has once again raised serious concerns. The London police added that several knives were seized during this operation and 'there is no known threat to the public.' According to police, the man is in custody on charges of carrying offensive weapons and planning and preparing a terrorist attack. Armed police quickly cordoned off Whitehall, where most of the important government buildings are located. Eyewitnesses say police officers had a young man, who appeared to be black, lying on the ground and surrounded him. Witnesses reported that officers aimed their weapons at him, and he did not resist. Moments later, this man was seen within the ring of police officers on the sidewalk and shortly after was transferred to a police vehicle and taken away from the scene. One eyewitness stated that they saw a backpack and knives on the ground near one of the intersections on Whitehall. After removing the individual who appeared to be the suspect, forensic officers arrived at the scene. This individual was arrested just a few meters from the office and residence of the Prime Minister. Theresa May, who is currently campaigning, was not in her office at the time of the incident. Security measures around the British Parliament have been intensified since the March 22 attack. During that attack, the assailant killed four people by driving a vehicle into a crowd and then fatally stabbed a police officer at the gates of Parliament. Police shot and killed the assailant, named Khalid Masood. Authorities believe Khalid Masood, a British Muslim citizen with a history of violent crimes, acted alone in this attack.
