Macron Announces Formation of Tripartite Contact Group to Reduce Tensions Between Hezbollah and Israel

The United States, France, and Israel have agreed to intensify their efforts to advance a roadmap for reducing tensions between Hezbollah and Israel. Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, told reporters on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Italy, "We have agreed with the United States on the principle of forming a tripartite contact group consisting of Israel, the United States, and France to advance the roadmap for reducing tensions, and we will do the same with Lebanese officials." Expressing concern over the escalation of conflicts between Israel and Hezbollah, he added, "France and the United States have been working in recent months to reduce tensions, and Paris has provided written proposals to both sides to prevent the escalation of conflicts at the Lebanon-Israel border." A senior French official also stated that due to the dangerous escalation of tensions in recent days and a significant increase in fire exchanges at the border, there is an urgent need to enhance the efforts of the United States and France. The Israeli army reported on Thursday, June 14, that about 40 rockets were launched from Lebanon into northern Israel. However, a Hezbollah-affiliated media outlet claimed that the number of rockets fired was over 100. Violence between Israel and Hezbollah has intensified this week with the firing of hundreds of rockets from southern Lebanon into northern Israel and the killing of a Hezbollah commander in an Israeli army attack. The Hamas group, which is supported by the Iranian government, killed 1,200 people and took about 250 hostages in a terrorist attack on southern Israel on October 7 last year. Following this attack, Israel launched an assault on Gaza and announced that it would continue the war in Gaza until the "destruction of Hamas." The United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Japan, and Israel are among the countries that have designated Hamas as a terrorist organization. The killing of a senior Hezbollah commander raises the possibility of increased tensions. Ongoing conflicts in the Gaza Strip coincide with rising tensions between Hezbollah and Israel. Israel has warned the people of Lebanon: "We will confront the continued escalation of tensions by Hezbollah with all our strength." Hezbollah has launched dozens of rockets into northern Israel.
