Macron Calls on French Citizens to Combat 'Intolerable' Anti-Semitism in Letter

The French President stated, 'Acts of hatred against our Jewish compatriots have tripled in just a few weeks compared to the entire last year.' Macron stressed that 'our Jewish compatriots experience a sorrow' with 'fear of taking their children to school, fear of going home alone,' stating, 'A France where our Jewish compatriots are afraid is not France. A France where French people are afraid because of their religion or origin is not France.' He welcomed police actions aimed at combating this 'epidemic' and restoring anti-Semitism 'to where it belongs,' meaning 'in court and behind bars,' writing, 'There is no tolerance for [acts that are] intolerable.' Macron referenced the 'crimes' committed by Hamas militants on October 7 and reiterated his support for Israel's right to defend itself, while calling for political dialogue and the establishment of a 'humanitarian coalition' to facilitate a 'humanitarian ceasefire.' The French President concluded by emphasizing the unity of the French people, stating, 'We seek justice, peace, and security for the people of Israel, for the Palestinians, and for the countries of the region.' According to media reports, a rally against 'anti-Semitism' is set to take place today in Paris, with many political forces and parties in France participating. Yael Braun-Pivet, the National Assembly President, and Gerard Larcher, the Senate President, called for 'public mobilization' at the rally against rising anti-Semitism, leading the march under a banner reading 'For the Republic, Against Anti-Semitism.' In this context, the BBC also reported that leaders of far-right political parties will be among the tens of thousands expected to participate in today's rally against anti-Semitism, while leaders of 'far-left' groups will be absent.
