Macron: The Law of the Jungle Cannot Help Resolve Iran's Nuclear Issue

French President Emmanuel Macron criticized the decision of his American counterpart to withdraw from the JCPOA, emphasizing that unilateral actions and the 'law of the jungle' cannot lead to a resolution of Iran's nuclear issue. Speaking after Donald Trump at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, October 3, he stated, 'What truly helps us resolve the situation in Iran? The law of the jungle and unilateral pressure? No.' He then supported the nuclear agreement reached three years ago by six world powers with Iran, saying, 'We know that Iran was on the path to achieving military capabilities from nuclear energy. What stopped it? The 2015 Vienna Agreement.' Macron added, 'Today we should not escalate regional tensions; rather, we should present a broader agenda that allows us to address our concerns through dialogue and multilateralism, including concerns related to nuclear issues, ballistic missiles, and regional policies that Iran has caused.' Hours earlier, Donald Trump, in his speech at the United Nations General Assembly, strongly criticized Iran while defending his decision to withdraw Washington from the nuclear agreement, stating that the U.S. has launched an 'economic pressure' campaign against Iran to prevent it from obtaining funds to advance its 'bloody agenda' in Syria and Yemen. Trump, who has always opposed this agreement and promised during his election campaign to cancel the JCPOA if he reached the White House, said, 'The nuclear agreement was a windfall for Iran's leaders. Since the signing of this agreement, Iran's military budget has grown by nearly 40%... This dictatorship uses financial resources to build missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads, increase internal repression, finance terrorism, and commit massacres in Syria and Yemen.' France and its European allies criticize Iran's missile program and the Islamic Republic's policies in the region but emphasize that the nuclear issue should be separated from these matters. They have stated that they are seeking to design a financial mechanism for trade exchanges with Iran and guarantee oil purchases from Tehran.
