Macron Warns of Consequences of Escalating Confrontation Over Iran's Nuclear Program

Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, on Tuesday, June 5, warned of the consequences of escalating confrontation over Iran's nuclear program, referring to Iran's recent actions to prepare its enrichment capacity infrastructure. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated in a press conference with Macron that he did not ask France to withdraw from the nuclear deal with Iran, known as the JCPOA, as he believes that increasing economic pressures on Iran will lead to the deal's collapse on its own. According to AFP, Macron said in a joint press conference that everyone must work towards stabilizing the situation and avoid escalating confrontation, as this would only lead to conflict. The French President emphasized that when one party decides to unilaterally withdraw from an agreement, the other party will not be encouraged to comply. Macron stated that there is no evidence that Iran has violated its commitments under the JCPOA. Donald Trump announced on May 8 that the U.S. was withdrawing from the nuclear agreement with Iran and would reimpose suspended sanctions while imposing new penalties on Tehran. The U.S. Treasury Department has warned European companies to end their cooperation with Tehran, leading several major European companies to announce their exit from Iran. In response, Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran, instructed the Atomic Energy Organization to prepare the necessary groundwork to reach 190,000 SWU of uranium enrichment 'currently within the framework of the JCPOA.' Iran's enrichment capacity is currently around 6,000 SWU. One day after this instruction, Ali Akbar Salehi, head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, stated that if Iran were to exit the JCPOA, it could reach a capacity of 190,000 SWU within a year and a half to two years. Macron further stated that while the JCPOA might be considered insufficient, it is a step forward compared to what existed before 2015, and it is better to preserve it. Netanyahu clarified that he did not intend to encourage Macron to withdraw from the nuclear deal, emphasizing that economic pressures would lead to its demise, which is why they did not focus on that issue. He added that their focus was on stopping Iran's expansionism in the region. Netanyahu accused Iran of using funds obtained from the lifting of nuclear sanctions to expand its influence in Syria, stating that they aim to bring 80,000 Shiite fighters from Afghanistan and Pakistan to Syria. He warned that this would ignite a religious war and another civil war, leading to refugees heading to places like France, Germany, or Europe. Netanyahu had given a similar warning during a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. In the Syrian civil war, Iran, along with its allied Shiite groups and Russia, supports Bashar al-Assad's government against rebels and jihadist groups. Israel has repeatedly bombed positions of Assad's allies and has stated it will not tolerate Iran's presence in Syria. The Islamic Republic of Iran considers its support for proxy groups in Syria and the region as support for the 'resistance axis,' while Western powers describe these activities as a threat to their allies and stability in the Middle East.
