Maduro's First Court Appearance on Drug Terrorism Charges

Five federal prosecutors sat at a table opposite him. Maduro, his wife, their son, and three others are accused of collaborating with drug cartels to facilitate the shipment of thousands of tons of drugs, including fentanyl and cocaine, to the United States. Legal experts say they could face life imprisonment if convicted. A new indictment released on Saturday states that Maduro collaborated with 'some of the most violent drug traffickers and drug terrorists in the world to bring tons of cocaine into the United States.' The report accused him of leading 'a corrupt and illegitimate government that has used state power for decades to protect and promote illegal activities, including drug trafficking.' Maduro and several close allies were previously indicted in a U.S. court in 2020 on federal charges including drug terrorism and conspiracy to import cocaine. The United States claims Maduro leads the drug trafficking organization, Cartel de Los Soles, and has designated the Venezuelan drug cartel as a foreign terrorist organization.
