Mahmoud Sadeghi Attempts Suicide; Afshin Baymani Transferred from Qazalhasar to Hospital with 'Stroke Symptoms'

A human rights organization reported that Afshin Baymani, a political prisoner in Qazalhasar, was transferred to a hospital due to deteriorating health. Simultaneously, officials at Adelabad prison in Shiraz transferred Mahmoud Sadeghi, a political prisoner, to a violent inmates' section as punishment after he attempted suicide. According to HRANA, the media outlet of human rights activists in Iran, on Thursday, September 8, officials at Qazalhasar prison in Alborz province transferred Afshin Baymani, a political prisoner, to an outside hospital due to 'signs of a heart attack.' Mr. Baymani, who has been sentenced to life imprisonment, had long been deprived of appropriate medical services and transfer to specialized treatment centers due to the obstruction by prison officials while suffering from coronary artery disease. The violation of the right to medical treatment for political prisoners has been reported multiple times in the prisons of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The same human rights organization also reported that Mahmoud Sadeghi, a political prisoner in Adelabad prison in Shiraz, 'attempted suicide by cutting his wrist'; he was 'transferred for punishment' to the section for violent criminals after receiving treatment. An informed source told HRANA that Mahmoud Sadeghi 'recently attempted suicide due to harsh solitary conditions in the training suites' and after being 'treated, was transferred as punishment to one of the solitary cells in the Irshad section.' According to this source, 'Ultimately, following protests against the poor conditions of this environment,' Mr. Sadeghi 'was transferred by Mr. Shirvani, an employee of the Irshad section of Adelabad prison, to the detention area for violent criminals with handcuffs and shackles.' Based on this report, this political prisoner, who had previously been sentenced to prison by the Islamic Revolutionary Court, 'was beaten by violent criminals at the direction of the Irshad section employee of Adelabad prison.' The endangerment of political prisoners' lives due to their transfer to dangerous locations has been reported multiple times before. Furthermore, previous reports indicate that pressure on political and non-political prisoners in the prisons of the Islamic Republic has repeatedly led to their suicide attempts, with some losing their lives. Additionally, it has been reported that the situation of all prisoners in the prisons of the Islamic Republic is extremely inhumane.
