Major Ukrainian Forces Attack in Russia's Kursk Region

On Wednesday, August 8, Russia announced that it is repelling the largest attack by Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region since the beginning of the war in March 2022. Sergey Shoigu, the head of Russia's Security Council, stated that Russia has made significant advances this year, capturing 420 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory after Ukraine's failed counteroffensive last year. The Russian Defense Ministry reported that Ukrainian forces attacked the border town of 'Sujah' on the night of August 8, 530 kilometers southwest of Moscow, with fighting continuing until the morning of August 9. Russian military bloggers also reported intense battles and a 10 to 15-kilometer incursion by Ukrainian forces into Russian territory. Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, commented on Ukraine's attack on the Kursk region, stating that the Kyiv regime has initiated another major provocation and is allegedly targeting ordinary citizens in the area 'indiscriminately.' He emphasized that he would soon meet with senior officials from the Ministry of Defense and the Federal Security Service regarding this matter. Russian Telegram channels published unverified images of shell-damaged houses in the Kursk region. Alexey Smirnov, the head of the Kursk region's administration, also reported that a Ukrainian attack drone collided with an ambulance outside the city, resulting in the deaths of the driver and a paramedic, while a doctor was injured. He did not provide more precise statistics and only urged citizens to donate blood. Sujah is the last operational point for Russian gas exports to Europe via Ukraine and is located 60 kilometers from the Kursk nuclear power plant. The battles around Sujah occur at a critical juncture in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. Meanwhile, Sergey Shoigu stated on August 8 that the window for peace is narrowing and delaying peace talks will be costly for the people of Ukraine. On the other hand, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that clashes with Ukrainian units continue in areas adjacent to the Russia-Ukraine border and reported the destruction of seven Ukrainian tanks. Ukraine claims to have sunk a Russian military submarine. Zelensky stated that Ukraine has finally received F-16 fighter jets. Ukraine attacked a Russian airport and several oil depots. A Russian drone strike hit a bus in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine, injuring six workers. Russia contained a fire caused by a Ukrainian drone attack on one of its oil depots.
