Majority Leader of the U.S. Senate: Obama is on the verge of a very bad deal with Iran

Mitch McConnell, the Republican Majority Leader in the U.S. Senate, stated on Sunday, March 15, that Barack Obama, the President of the United States, is on the verge of a "very bad deal" with Iran. He also emphasized that Congress will attempt to review such an agreement. In an interview with CNN, McConnell remarked: It seems that the (Obama) administration is about to reach a very bad agreement with one of the worst regimes in the world, which would allow them to maintain their nuclear infrastructure. Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif are set to resume their negotiations for a final agreement to resolve the Iranian nuclear dispute on Sunday in Lausanne, Switzerland. Iran and the 1+5 group have until June to reach a final agreement. Previously, the two sides were expected to reach a general (political) agreement by March 24. According to Reuters, John Kerry expressed hope on Saturday that a comprehensive agreement would be reached "in the coming days." However, 47 Republican senators sent an open letter to Ali Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Republic, stating that any agreement with the Obama administration would only last until the end of his presidency. The White House condemned this action by the Republican senators. On Saturday, the White House once again warned Senate members not to interfere in the nuclear negotiations with Iran, as any potential legislative approval by the Senate could have a "deeply negative impact" on the discussions with the Islamic Republic. Nevertheless, Mitch McConnell stated: It is very clear that the President does not want Congress to be involved in this matter at all, and this concerns us. The Republican Majority Leader of the U.S. Senate said that if an agreement with Iran is reached, the Senate will pass a measure requiring the administration to present such an agreement for review by the Senate. McConnell stated: If ultimately no agreement is reached in these negotiations, American lawmakers will intensify sanctions against Iran. According to Reuters, as a potential agreement between Iran and global powers approaches, the differences between the White House and Republicans in Congress over this issue have intensified.
