Man Accused of Attempted Murder of Salman Rushdie in New York Faces Federal Charges

Hadi Matar, the man accused of attempting to murder the famous author Salman Rushdie in New York, is now facing federal terrorism charges for 'supporting Hezbollah.' These charges were brought forth based on an indictment released on Wednesday. Matar, who previously faced state-level charges of murder and assault, to which he has not confessed, is now confronted with three new terrorism charges. He is accused of stabbing Rushdie more than 12 times, blinding him in one eye. The attack occurred while the author was speaking at a center in western New York. Matar, of Lebanese descent, remains incarcerated in Chautauqua County Jail in Mayville, New York. His defense attorney has stated that Matar intends to plead not guilty to the federal charges as well. Hezbollah's media office in Lebanon did not respond to requests for comment regarding the allegations linking Matar to the group. Ruhollah Khomeini, the former leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, had issued a fatwa calling for Rushdie's murder following the publication of 'The Satanic Verses' in 1988. This book was deemed offensive by some Muslims, and Rushdie spent a decade in hiding after the fatwa was issued. Matar is a Shia Muslim, and Hezbollah, a Shia Islamist group, aligns with the ideology of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Rushdie was blinded in one eye and severely injured in his left hand during the knife attack in August 2022, which took place while he was speaking at an educational center near Lake Erie. Rushdie published his memoir about the attack titled 'Knife: Reflections After the Attempted Murder' this year.
