Mark Vogel, American Teacher Released from Russia, Welcomed by Trump Upon Arrival in the U.S.

The White House announced late on Tuesday, February 23, that Mark Vogel, an American teacher who was released from a Russian prison, has arrived in the United States and was welcomed by President Donald Trump. In a post on social media platform X, the White House stated, 'A promise was made, and it was kept.' Mark Vogel had been detained in Russia for about four years on drug trafficking charges and was released during a 'swap' with Moscow. Mike Waltz, Trump's national security advisor, earlier on Tuesday issued a statement saying that the President and his special envoy Steve Witkoff could announce that Mr. Witkoff, along with Mark Vogel, was leaving Russian airspace. He added that Trump, Witkoff, and other advisors to the U.S. President negotiated a 'swap' that reflects the goodwill of the Russians and is a sign of moving in the 'right' direction to end the 'horrific' war in Ukraine. According to Waltz, since Trump took office, he has successfully facilitated the release of detained Americans worldwide, and the President's efforts will continue until all Americans in custody return to the United States. Mark Vogel was arrested for possessing a small amount of marijuana, which he claimed had been prescribed to him by a doctor in the U.S., and was sentenced to 14 years in prison on charges of 'intending to sell drugs to students.' Meanwhile, the United States has repeatedly protested the detention and imprisonment of innocent American citizens in Russia.
