Matt Gaetz Withdraws; Pamela Bondi, Trump's New Nominee for Attorney General

Pam Bondi was previously the Attorney General of Florida, and in a statement released on Thursday evening, December 1, Trump referred to her as someone who has 'fiercely' stood against criminals in Florida for about 20 years and will focus on the mission of the U.S. Department of Justice, which is to combat crime and make the United States safe again. Trump had initially nominated Matt Gaetz for this position, but amid rising opposition, Gaetz announced his withdrawal from the nomination on Thursday. He noted in a post on social media platform X that 'my confirmation could unfairly impact the transition of power to Trump/Vance.' Gaetz faced allegations of sexual misconduct and some potentially illegal activities, and his nomination by Trump sparked widespread protests, even from some Republican figures, making it unlikely that he could secure Senate approval. A committee in the U.S. House of Representatives had previously been investigating Gaetz's potentially illegal activities, but since he resigned from the House to accept Trump's nomination, this investigation will also be closed. The 42-year-old Gaetz first entered the House of Representatives in 2016 and had recently won re-election. However, the ethical allegations against him and some of his actions in the House, including designing and advancing a plan to oust Kevin McCarthy from the speakership last year, had made him a controversial figure.
