McCaul: The Islamic Republic is Trying to Influence the U.S. Elections and Strengthen Distrust in Political Institutions

Michael McCaul, the Republican chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, in response to a Voice of America question regarding Microsoft's report on the details of the Islamic Republic's 'cyber infiltration operations' in U.S. institutions, stated that the Iranian government is attempting to influence the U.S. presidential elections by creating distrust in American political institutions. McCaul added that the Iranian regime has a long history of brutal transnational repression efforts, including assassination, kidnapping, and hacking of opponents, journalists, activists, and former Iranian and American officials. McCaul also stated that U.S. actions to punish and deter Iran's transnational threats have not been sufficient, allowing the Iranian regime to attack the United States, American institutions, and individuals living here and in Europe. He urged the Biden administration to use all available tools to expose the Islamic Republic's transnational attacks and infiltration operations and to allocate more resources to neutralize these conspiracies. Microsoft recently detailed the Islamic Republic's 'cyber infiltration operations' in U.S. institutions, including in U.S. election campaigns, stating that Iranian-backed hackers targeted a senior official in the U.S. presidential campaign in June. The FBI confirmed on Monday in response to Voice of America that it is investigating the alleged hacking of the campaign headquarters of former President Donald Trump, the Republican candidate for the 2024 presidential election, by the Islamic Republic. This FBI decision comes just days after Trump's campaign announced that the Iranian government hacked the computer network of the campaign and stole sensitive documents. Trump's campaign did not provide specific evidence showing Iranian involvement, but the claim arose shortly after Microsoft released a report detailing foreign agents' efforts to interfere in the U.S. election efforts in 2024. The Iranian representative at the United Nations denied Tehran's involvement in response to a question from the Associated Press regarding Trump's campaign's claims. However, Iranian officials had previously threatened Trump with assassination over the killing of Qassem Soleimani, the former commander of the Quds Force. Soleimani, before his death, mentioned Trump in a speech, stating that his forces are closer than Trump thinks. Recently, various reports have emerged regarding threats from the Islamic Republic against Donald Trump or his campaign. The FBI is investigating the 'hacking of Trump's campaign headquarters' by the Islamic Republic. The White House condemned any foreign attempts to interfere in U.S. elections and takes it very seriously.
