McConnell: Stopping Attacks on American Soldiers Requires Direct Threat to Islamic Republic's Interests and IRGC Officers

Mitch McConnell, the Republican minority leader in the U.S. Senate, stated on Thursday, January 25, that as long as the Islamic Republic does not face threats to its interests and IRGC officers in the region, Iran's attacks and those of its proxies against American soldiers will continue. He referred to the President's powers to use military force in cases of attacks on American citizens and interests, stating that the Biden administration has refrained from imposing 'minimal' costs on the Islamic Republic as the 'master architect of regional conflicts.' This prominent Republican senator noted in his Senate remarks that for years, the Islamic Republic has acted as the 'most active state sponsor of terrorism in the world,' engaging in 'training, military equipping, financing, and coordinating efforts' to remove U.S. forces from the Middle East and destroy Israel. Senator McConnell mentioned that when Joe Biden took office as President of the United States, Republicans warned him not to treat Iran 'softly,' not to abandon the 'maximum pressure' policy, not to seek to revive the 'failed' nuclear deal, and not to ignore the Islamic Republic's 'relentless campaign of terrorism.' He continued his criticisms of the White House, stating that Joe Biden has 'ignored' over 80 attacks on American forces during his first two years in office. The Republican minority leader in the Senate reminded that since October 7 (the day of Hamas's terrorist attack on Israel), Iranian proxies have been responsible for 150 illegal attacks on American forces in Iraq and Syria, as well as ongoing attacks on American military and civilian vessels in the Red Sea. According to Senator McConnell, despite leading the world's most powerful military, Joe Biden has still been unable to compel the Islamic Republic and its proxies to stop their attacks. He criticized U.S. attacks on Houthi positions as being 'hesitant and crosswise' against 'low-value positions of Houthi terrorists.' Senator McConnell also stated that attacks in Iraq and Syria against Iranian proxies have caused 'limited' damage. The severe criticisms from the Republican minority leader in the Senate regarding Joe Biden's approach to Iran come at a time when the White House has warned the Islamic Republic and its proxies since the beginning of the October 7 terrorist attack by Hamas on Israel that if they seek to escalate conflicts in the region, they will face a decisive response from the United States. With the intensification of attacks by Iranian proxies on U.S. positions and soldiers in Syria and Iraq following Israel's invasion of Gaza aimed at destroying Hamas, the United States has targeted these groups' positions multiple times. The Biden administration, along with Britain and supported by dozens of other countries, has also targeted the positions of this group in response to attacks by Iranian-backed Houthis on vessels passing through the Red Sea. Biden administration officials have repeatedly warned that Washington will not hesitate to defend American interests and soldiers, as well as regional allies and partners, against attacks from the Islamic Republic and its proxies. The White House confirmed that the U.S. targeted Houthi positions three times on Friday. Another commercial vessel was attacked in the Gulf of Aden. The U.S. stated that recent Iranian missile attacks violate the sovereignty of Iraq, Syria, and Pakistan. The U.S. government has changed its position, again designating the Houthis as 'global terrorists.' Reuters reported that the U.S. targeted Houthi anti-ship missiles. Biden stated that the Islamic Republic avoids confrontation with the U.S.; we are also not seeking a proxy war with Iran. Biden confirmed the attack on Houthi positions in Yemen; the international community's response to this group was 'united and decisive.' U.S. bases in Iraq and Syria were targeted by drone attacks.
