Meeting of U.S. Special Envoy Deputy on Iran with the Children of Sharmeh: He Should Not Have Been Arrested

Abram Pili, the Deputy Special Envoy of the United States for Iran, met on Friday with the two children of Jamshid Sharmeh, an Iranian-German citizen sentenced to death. This senior American diplomat shared a photo of himself alongside Ghazaleh and Shayan Sharmeh on the social media platform 'X' (formerly Twitter), stating: 'I welcomed the opportunity to meet with the family of Jamshid Sharmeh today. He should never have been detained in Iran, and we hope to see a day when he is reunited with his loved ones.' In response to Abram Pili's post, Ghazaleh Sharmeh emphasized the need for 'action' and that her father should be part of any agreement for the release of American citizens. Ms. Sharmeh added: 'We continue to urge the Biden administration to work with stakeholders [of the Nobody Left Behind campaign] or halt negotiations with my father's abductors.' She also expressed serious concern about her father's situation in an interview with the Persian section of Voice of America after meeting with some American lawmakers. Jamshid Sharmeh, who also holds permanent residency in the United States, was abducted in 2020 in the United Arab Emirates. At that time, Iran's Ministry of Intelligence described Mr. Sharmeh as the 'leader of the terrorist group Tondar, which directed armed and terrorist actions from the U.S.' The Iranian Royal Association, Tondar, based in Los Angeles, seeks to restore monarchy in Iran and operates radio and television stations outside of Iran. Islamic Republic officials have accused Jamshid Sharmeh of planning a deadly attack on a mosque in 2008, which resulted in 15 deaths and over 200 injuries. Jamshid Sharmeh was sentenced to death earlier this year. His family has denied these accusations. According to Amnesty International, Mr. Sharmeh has been tortured over the past three years and held in solitary confinement for extended periods. Amnesty International states that Jamshid Sharmeh has also been deprived of adequate healthcare and should be released.
