Melania Trump Calls for End to Separation of Children from Immigrant Families

Melania Trump, the First Lady of the United States, made a rare political statement calling for an end to the controversial policy. Mrs. Trump, who typically refrains from commenting on political issues, preferred to advocate for bipartisan cooperation to resolve the problem rather than condemning the policy. Her spokesperson stated, "Mrs. Trump does not like children being separated from their families and hopes that both parties can work together to reform immigration law. She believes America should be a country that enforces all laws but also governs with compassion." Donald Trump also tweeted: "Democrats must work with Republicans to find a solution for border security. Don’t wait until after the midterm elections because you will lose." According to AFP, this border security policy known as 'zero tolerance,' implemented by the Trump administration, has been 'painful' for immigrant families and has sparked protests from many politicians in both parties. Congressional Democrats pledged on Sunday to end the 'evil' policy of separating children from immigrant families at the U.S. borders. Senator Jeff Merkley, who visited the Mexican border with a group of Congress members, stated, "It has been called zero tolerance, but 'zero humanity' is a better name, and this policy makes no sense." This group of Congress members visited a supermarket building that has now become a holding facility for about 1,500 children. After the visit, Senator Merkley remarked, "Abusing children to gain leverage in legislation is unacceptable and evil." The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights also condemned this method on Monday. Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, in his opening speech at the UN Human Rights Commission meeting, said, "It is against conscience for a government to pressure parents by abusing their children." He urged the U.S. government to immediately end the 'forced separation of children.' The U.S. government is preparing for the entry of more immigrant children by planning to construct more camps at military bases in Texas. Officials stated that approximately 2,000 children have been separated from their parents over a six-week period. The release of these statistics has intensified debate and criticism of this policy. Donald Trump has stated that he wants to end the practice of separating children but continues to criticize Democrats for creating this crisis. In contrast, Mr. Trump's critics argue that he himself has created this situation. Since early May, when Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that all illegal immigrants entering from Mexico would be detained, instances of separating children from immigrant families have increased.
