Meloni Negotiated with Trump Regarding Detained Italian Journalist in Iran

The Prime Minister of Italy has traveled to Florida for discussions with Donald Trump, the elected President of the United States, and her deputy states that one of the topics of discussion is the detention of an Italian journalist in Tehran. Giorgia Meloni's office and Trump's transition team have not yet made an official comment on this visit and the meeting between the two sides, but numerous media outlets, including Reuters and CNN, have reported that Ms. Meloni arrived at Mar-a-Lago in Florida on Saturday evening, January 15. Some media have also published short photos and videos of Ms. Meloni alongside Donald Trump at the Mar-a-Lago club. Matteo Salvini, the Deputy Prime Minister of Italy, confirmed on Sunday, January 16, that one of the topics discussed by Ms. Meloni and Mr. Trump was the imprisonment of Cecilia Sala, an Italian journalist, in Iran. He, who is the leader of the right-wing 'Lega' party in Italy, wrote on X, formerly Twitter, that the Prime Minister discussed 'peace, industrial and commercial cooperation, security, and the release of Cecilia Sala' with Donald Trump. Previously, the New York Times had reported that 'one of the potential topics [in the conversation between the two] is the detention of Cecilia Sala, a prominent Italian journalist, in Iran.' The official Italian news agency (ANSA) also confirmed this issue. This agency noted that Giorgia Meloni is an official invitee to Donald Trump's inauguration on January 20, reporting that 'the detention of the Italian journalist in Iran may have altered the Prime Minister's agenda.' Reuters also noted that Giorgia Meloni's foreign policy is 'under test' following the detention of Cecilia Sala. Cecilia Sala, an Italian journalist who entered Iran with a valid visa to report, was detained on December 20. Her arrest occurred three days after the arrest of Mohammad Abedini at Milan Airport in Italy; Abedini has been accused by the U.S. of transferring sensitive drone parts to the Revolutionary Guard. The foreign ministries of both countries have summoned each other's ambassadors in the past two days, and relations between Tehran and Rome have faced challenges. One day after the Iranian ambassador in Rome was summoned, Tehran also summoned the Italian ambassador. The Iranian ambassador in Rome was the first official of the Islamic Republic to mention the connection between the detention of Cecilia Sala and Mohammad Abedini. Islamic Republic officials had remained silent for about two weeks regarding the detention of the Italian journalist, and after this news was publicized by Italy, the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance announced without explanation that the reason for the journalist's detention was 'violating the laws of the Islamic Republic.' Reporters Without Borders and the International Federation of Journalists have described the detention of this journalist as 'arbitrary' and the hostage-taking of an Italian citizen for the purpose of 'extortion.' The U.S. and several European countries have repeatedly referred to the detention of Western citizens by the Iranian government as 'hostage diplomacy.' Giorgia Meloni is among the few international officials who have visited Trump at his residence following his victory in the U.S. presidential election. The two sides have praised each other multiple times, and last month during the reopening of the Notre-Dame Church, Giorgia Meloni, Donald Trump, and Elon Musk dined together. Additionally, Ms. Meloni's visit to the U.S. comes as she is set to host Joe Biden in Rome in the coming days. The U.S. has called the detention of the Italian journalist in Iran a 'retaliatory' action.
