It is reported that Menendez is apparently the first sitting senator in U.S. history to be charged with two unrelated criminal offenses. The new charges follow several years of investigations, including transactions involving a New Jersey businessman who is a friend of Menendez's wife, who received an exclusive license from the Egyptian government to certify that imported meat to that country complies with Islamic standards. According to the Associated Press, officials also questioned the Menendez family's dealings with a real estate developer in New Jersey. Senator Menendez, who has been a member of the House of Representatives since 1993, entered the Senate in 2006 and is the chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. A member of the Democratic Party, Menendez described the January 2021 attack on the U.S. Congress as chaos and criticized former President Donald Trump for claiming election fraud, which he called a trigger for the attack. He is a staunch supporter of immigration reform and has worked to revise what he calls a 'failed immigration system.' Menendez has an 'F' rating from the National Rifle Association due to his support for gun law reform and an 'F' rating from the Gun Owners of America.
