Merkel Rejects Key UK Demand Regarding Brexit

Angela Merkel, the Chancellor of Germany, rejected one of the most important demands of the British Prime Minister regarding the country's exit from the European Union, emphasizing that the UK cannot negotiate both its exit from the EU and its future relationship with the union simultaneously. According to the British newspaper The Guardian, Ms. Merkel stated on Wednesday, April 9, 'Negotiations must first clarify how these relationships, which have been so intertwined until now, will be resolved. Once this question is answered, we can hope to soon begin discussions about our future relationship.' The UK officially began its exit process from the EU on Wednesday with the signature of Theresa May, the Prime Minister of the country. In her six-page letter referencing Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty for leaving the EU, she wrote that she believes an agreement on future conditions should be reached simultaneously with the exit from the union. However, the European Union has emphasized for months that negotiations must first address issues affected by this separation, such as the rights of EU citizens residing in the UK or Britons living in EU member states. Meanwhile, the initiation of the UK's exit process from the EU has also elicited reactions from other officials in the union and European countries. According to the Associated Press, the French Foreign Minister stated that while the decision of the British people has broken the taboo that the EU will not go back, it has united and strengthened the determination of the union's members. Jean-Marc Ayrault added in his statement that the decision of the British people must be respected, but it now depends on the other EU members to pursue their common wishes and goals and strengthen the EU. Donald Tusk, the President of the European Council, also warned that Brexit will have no winners and that the main issue in the next two years will be how to manage the damages caused by this event.
