Mexico Offers Millions in Reward for Capture of Fugitive Criminal

Mexico has set a reward of nearly $4 million for information leading to the capture of Joaquin Guzman, one of the most significant drug cartel leaders in the Americas, who escaped from a high-security prison. Guzman, known as "El Chapo" (Spanish for "Shorty"), escaped on Saturday, July 20, while being closely monitored in his cell around the clock. He was last arrested in March of last year, and this is not the first time he has successfully escaped from prison. Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman was considered the most powerful and influential drug lord in Mexico. When he was arrested, Mexican media hailed it as a success for the government. The last time Guzman was arrested was in March of last year, exactly one year before he escaped from prison. The Attorney General of Mexico has announced a reward of 60 million pesos (approximately $3.82 million) for anyone who provides credible information about him. There are suspicions that prison guards may have been involved in Guzman's escape. Currently, the prison warden has been dismissed, and investigations are ongoing. Attorney General Arly Gomez addressed reporters on July 22, stating that he will have "no moment of peace." No reports have yet surfaced regarding any potential leads on Guzman's whereabouts.
