Michael McCaul Praises Canada for Designating IRGC as Terrorist: Islamic Republic Continues to Spread Instability Worldwide

The Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Michael McCaul, praised Canada’s decision to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. On Thursday, June 21, he stated, "This action sends a clear message to Tehran that terrorist activities will not be tolerated and should not be tolerated." This senior U.S. official also remarked, "As the regime continues to spread instability on a global scale, from Yemen to Ukraine, I urge all partners and allies to follow Canada’s lead." A U.S. government spokesperson also expressed gratitude for Canada’s designation of the IRGC as a terrorist organization and stated support for similar actions by other countries. In a written response to the Persian section of Voice of America, the U.S. State Department spokesperson wrote that the IRGC’s "terrorism and deadly plots" pose a "danger to the entire world" and that the Biden administration is prepared to support any country intending to label the IRGC as a terrorist organization. Canada announced on Wednesday, June 20, that it had decided to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization "under criminal regulations." Additionally, Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly stated, "We strongly advise Canadians not to travel to Iran and urge those currently there to return immediately." The designation of the IRGC as a terrorist organization by the Canadian government has received positive reactions from political, civil, and human rights activists, as well as prominent figures opposing the Islamic Republic; many from Europe and Australia have called for similar actions.
