Michigan Shooter Arrested

Michigan police in the United States announced that they arrested a 45-year-old man early Sunday morning who shot and killed at least seven people on Saturday evening. According to the Associated Press, the man began shooting around 6 PM Saturday in Kalamazoo, Michigan, targeting a restaurant parking lot, a Ford car dealership, and an apartment complex, resulting in at least seven deaths. A 14-year-old girl and four others were killed outside a restaurant in Kalamazoo, while a father and son were shot inside the car dealership. A woman was also critically injured in the shooting at the apartment complex. The regional police chief told the media that they do not believe the shooter targeted specific individuals, but rather appeared to shoot indiscriminately. He also stated that the individual did not resist arrest, and several weapons were found inside his vehicle. This shooting on Saturday night in Michigan is one of the latest incidents of such shootings and armed attacks in the U.S., which have become frequent in recent years. Among them was an armed attack in December of this year on a welfare center in San Bernardino, California, which left dozens dead and injured, and for which the Islamic State claimed responsibility. Shortly before that, three people, including a police officer, were killed in a shooting by an armed man inside a family planning clinic. In one prior incident in June, a white man shot attendees at a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina, causing significant tension in the city, where nine people, including the church pastor, were killed. The frequent armed attacks on offices, health and welfare centers, schools, and colleges, as well as indiscriminate shootings in streets and shopping centers in the U.S., have led opponents of private gun ownership to either call for a complete ban or stricter regulations on its sale. Barack Obama, during his presidency, also attempted to address this issue but faced strong opposition from a powerful gun rights lobby. Mr. Obama ultimately announced new regulations for gun ownership in January of this year to reduce violence stemming from it. The President stated that he issued these regulations within the scope of his powers and without the need for congressional approval.
