Microsoft Announces Skype Will Be Permanently Shut Down

Microsoft has announced that the communication software 'Skype' will be accessible for the last time on May 4, 2024, after which users will have to say goodbye to the software permanently. The American multinational technology company stated in a press release on Friday, March 1, that shutting down Skype will help Microsoft simplify its communication options by focusing on its proprietary service, 'Teams'. At the same time, Microsoft has reassured Skype users that they can easily transfer their access information to 'Teams' for free, and all their messages and contacts will be automatically transferred to this software. With the end of Skype, this software will join other popular services like Internet Explorer and Windows Phone, which Microsoft was unable to manage. Skype, a user-to-user telecommunication network, was created in 2003 by Swedish Niklas Zennström and Danish Janus Friis. This technology was able to challenge the landline telephone industry in the early 2000s with cheap voice and video calls and quickly became a household name. In 2005, the multinational e-commerce company eBay acquired Skype, and in 2011, Microsoft succeeded in acquiring Skype for $8.5 billion in competition with Google and Facebook. The rise in the use of video communication software due to the COVID-19 pandemic saw Skype have about 150 million monthly users at that time, but this number fell to 23 million by 2020, only to regain temporary popularity during the pandemic. At its peak, the software had hundreds of millions of users, but in recent years, it lagged behind competitors like Zoom and Slack, which are simpler and more reliable. During the pandemic and the increase in remote work, Microsoft decided to invest more in Microsoft Teams and attract corporate users, who were previously a significant part of Skype's audience, by integrating this service with other Office applications. In its statement on Friday, Microsoft said, 'Skype has played an important role in shaping modern communications. We are proud to have been part of this journey.' It is still unclear how many users or employees this decision will affect, and Microsoft has not yet provided an explanation on this matter. Other major technology companies have also faced challenges in online communication tools; for example, Google has repeatedly tried to enhance the quality of voice and video calls in applications like Hangouts and Duo.
