Microsoft: Cybercriminal Assistance to Russia, China, and Iran is Increasing

Microsoft has released a report on digital threats, stating that Russia, China, and Iran are increasingly relying on criminal groups for cyber espionage and hacking networks of their adversaries, such as the United States. According to the report, the growing collaboration between authoritarian governments and criminal hackers poses a warning to national security officials and cybersecurity experts in targeted countries, who say these collaborations are evidence of actions taken by Beijing or the Kremlin aimed at undermining and harming rival nations. Microsoft analysts found that an Iranian-linked criminal hacker group attempted to sell or publish personal information obtained from a dating website in Israel after breaching it. Microsoft concluded that the hackers had two goals: to embarrass Israelis and to obtain money. Researchers also identified a Russian criminal network that breached over 50 electronic devices used by the Ukrainian army in June, apparently seeking information to facilitate Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It seems this group had no financial motivation other than the potential salary received from Russia. Microsoft adds that for countries like Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea, which also have ties to hacker groups, collaborating with cybercriminals is seen as a hassle-free and mutually beneficial link, allowing these governments to increase the scale and effectiveness of cyber operations without incurring high costs.
