Middle East at Risk of Escalating Crisis; U.S. F-18 and F-22 Jets Head to the Region

On Wednesday, the Associated Press reported that about 12 F-18 fighter jets took off from the USS Theodore Roosevelt and landed at a military base in the Middle East. The AP cited an American official stating, "This action is part of the Pentagon's efforts to help defend Israel against potential attacks from the Islamic Republic of Iran and its proxy forces, as well as to protect U.S. forces." According to this official, the F-18s and a Grumman E-2 Hawkeye reconnaissance aircraft took off from the American ship in the Gulf of Oman and landed on Monday at an undisclosed base. Lloyd Austin, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, has ordered an increase in military presence in the region. Officials are concerned about escalating violence in the Middle East following the killing of a senior Hezbollah commander in Lebanon and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh last week in Iran. Both groups are financially and militarily supported by the Islamic Republic. Israel is suspected of being behind Haniyeh's killing, although the country has neither confirmed nor denied this. With rising tensions in the Middle East, U.S. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris held a meeting with members of the national security team at the White House on Monday evening. This meeting took place as the Islamic Republic threatened Israel over the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, and the Wall Street Journal reported that an Arab diplomat stated that an Iranian official said on Monday that an attack from Iran could occur at any time within the next 48 hours. Reuters: Islamic Republic officials and proxies are discussing "retaliatory actions against Israel." The New York Times claimed that Khamenei has ordered a "direct attack" on Israel. Prince Reza Pahlavi stated that Ismail Haniyeh was a major criminal who should never have set foot on Iranian soil. The U.S. Secretary of Defense emphasized Israel's right to defend itself against threats from the Islamic Republic.
