Missile Attack on Liberty Camp Leaves 'Over 40 Injured'

A spokesperson for the Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization (MEK) stated on Tuesday, July 14, that Liberty Camp, near Baghdad Airport, was targeted by missile and mortar attacks. According to Reuters, Shahin Qabadi, a spokesperson for the MEK in Paris, reported that as of midnight Tuesday, more than 40 individuals had been injured in these rocket attacks. Previously, Shahryar Kiya, another MEK spokesperson, had informed Reuters that the rocket attacks had resulted in casualties, but he did not specify the number of injured. This spokesperson added that the rocket attacks were likely carried out by Iraqi groups affiliated with Iran. Eyewitnesses told Reuters that they heard approximately 20 to 30 explosions in the camp. The MEK claims that at least 50 rockets were fired at Liberty Camp, with parts of the camp catching fire. The report states that the rocket attacks began at 8:30 PM local time. Last November, Liberty Camp, which houses MEK forces, was also subjected to missile attacks that, according to the United Nations, resulted in at least 27 MEK members killed and around 200 others injured. Meanwhile, Wathiq al-Battat, the leader of a militia group called 'Jaysh al-Mukhtar,' claimed responsibility for the attack on Liberty Camp near Baghdad. Liberty Camp has been a holding facility for MEK members since 2012, following the closure of Camp Ashraf, until their transfer to a safe country. Liberty Camp was previously attacked in February 2013, resulting in at least five deaths. In this context, Wathiq al-Battat took responsibility for the missile attack on the MEK camp, while the UN Secretary-General condemned the attack on Liberty Camp, and the US Secretary of State also condemned the missile attack on Liberty Camp, stating that '22 MEK members' were killed in the rocket attack.
