Moderna: New Vaccine Effective Against Newly Emerged Highly Mutated COVID Variant

Moderna has stated that its clinical trial data shows that the updated COVID vaccine is effective against the highly mutated variant known as 'BA.2.86', which has raised concerns about a new wave of infections. The company reported that its new vaccine increases neutralizing antibodies against the new variant by approximately nine times. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicated that the new variant may be capable of infecting individuals who have previously contracted COVID or have been vaccinated due to additional mutations. This health agency, along with the World Health Organization, is monitoring the new variant. The variant carries over 35 mutations in critical parts of the virus compared to the previous variant 'XBB.1.5', which dominated most of 2023, and the updated vaccines targeted it. According to the CDC, the current rise in cases and hospitalizations in the U.S. is likely due to infections with 'XBB' generation viruses and is not related to the new highly mutated variant. Last month, Moderna and Pfizer announced that their new vaccines are effective against another concerning Omicron variant called 'EG.5' (Eris). Pfizer has garnered the attention of European observers and the UK regulatory agency, but neither has announced approval for Moderna's updated vaccine. Additionally, Dr. Mahan Ghafari, an epidemiologist at Oxford University, previously stated to Voice of America that the emergence of new subvariants is a reminder of the ongoing circulation of COVID in all countries. He added that information on monitoring new COVID variants in Iran is more limited, with fewer updates on reports, and it is unclear whether there is a vaccination planning status for the fall or if vaccines will be updated. A faculty member at Azad University emphasized three weeks ago that 'no research' has been conducted on drugs and vaccines in Iran, and the Ministry of Health showed no willingness to attract researchers and investigate this matter. Mostafa Nourizadeh stressed that the Ministry of Health should plan 'from now on' for the production and import of updated vaccines. The Deputy Minister of Health in Iran stated that 'according to previous guidelines', if six months have passed since individuals received their previous COVID vaccine, they should seek vaccination. However, there has been no information released regarding the types of vaccines, their availability, or whether they have been updated. The UK has approved the updated COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech, while U.S. health authorities have stated that vaccinated individuals are not safe from the new variant.
