Mogherini: We Are Preparing for an Important Visit to Iran

Federica Mogherini, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, says preparations are underway for an "important visit" to Iran. This visit follows the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The exact timing of the visit has not been specified. According to the nuclear agreement reached between Iran and six world powers, which came into effect last month, Tehran's nuclear activities have significantly decreased. International sanctions and Western sanctions related to the nuclear program have also been lifted. Ms. Mogherini was the coordinator of negotiations between the six world powers and Iranian officials and has met several times with Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iran's Foreign Minister, in recent months. According to the Associated Press, the EU's foreign policy chief stated on February 6 that preparations for the upcoming visit are progressing well between the two sides. She added that all 28 EU member states have welcomed the opening of relations with Tehran. After a meeting with foreign ministers of EU member states, Ms. Mogherini said, "It was very important to see that members are aligned on the path, goals, intentions, and preparations for what we are doing with Iran." The senior EU representative in foreign affairs and security noted that Mr. Zarif will also soon visit Brussels, the capital of Belgium and the main headquarters of the EU. The Iranian Foreign Minister is scheduled to travel to Brussels on February 15 (next week).
