Mohammad Hossein Karroubi Summoned to Court on Charges of 'Acting Against National Security'

Mohammad Hossein Karroubi, son of Mehdi Karroubi, the imprisoned Secretary-General of the 'National Trust Party', has been summoned to court on charges of 'acting against national security' following the publication of a letter from his father addressed to Hassan Rouhani. The 'Saham News' website reported on Wednesday (October 20) that the second investigative branch of the 'Shahid Moqaddas' prosecutor's office has sent Mohammad Hossein Karroubi's case to the Revolutionary Court for a ruling. Hossein Karroubi stated in an interview with 'Saham News' that a complaint filed by the IRGC Intelligence a month ago was the reason for his case, and he has faced the charge of 'acting against national security' after four interrogation sessions. Karroubi added, 'A bail of one billion rials was issued for this charge, which was due to my father's letter to Mr. Rouhani seven months ago.' He ultimately questioned, 'Where in this action is there an act against national security?' On April 10 of this year, Mehdi Karroubi had requested in a letter to Hassan Rouhani that he ask the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic to hold a 'public trial' for him 'even with the composition desired by the power brokers.' In his letter, Karroubi added that 'the outcome of this trial will determine who has returned from the revolution and is unworthy and who continues the path of the revolution and is worthy among the parties involved in the 2009 election dispute.' This letter was essentially a response to remarks made by Ali Khamenei in March 2016, where he referred to the leaders of the 'Green Movement' as 'unworthy.' Karroubi also responded to these remarks by writing, 'The irony is that those who sacrificed the material and spiritual assets of the country for a falsehood and whose insight has become clear to everyone these days have become insightful and worthy.' According to 'Saham News', the formation of a case against Mehdi Karroubi's son is 'a precursor to the arrest of 60 reformist political figures by the IRGC.' The website reported that 'some of these individuals are to be kept in long-term imprisonment, while others will be released after the 2017 presidential election.' It added that 'the IRGC and the Tharallah Security Headquarters intend to carry out this action three months before the 2017 presidential election.' 'Saham News' also mentioned that it will publish a report in the coming days on the IRGC's project to disqualify Hassan Rouhani and arrest well-known reformist figures. Mir Hossein Mousavi, Zahra Rahnavard, and Mehdi Karroubi, who protested the results of the 2009 presidential election, have been under house arrest without trial since February 2011. Mehdi Karroubi, after three years of 'imprisonment' in the 'safe house' of the Ministry of Intelligence, was moved to his home in Jamaran in February 2014 but remains under house arrest.
