Mohammad Taqi Karrubi: Rouhani Has Not Responded to My Father's Letter

Mohammad Taqi Karrubi, the son of Mehdi Karrubi, states that there has been no response from Hassan Rouhani and the eleventh government regarding his father's letter addressed to the President of Iran, which calls for efforts to establish a public trial for him. According to the Khabar Online website close to Mir Hossein Mousavi, Mohammad Taqi Karrubi added: "No one is accountable for the continuation of the house arrest." After the failure of Mohammad Yazdi and Mohammad Taqi Misbah Yazdi to enter the fifth term of the Assembly of Experts, Ali Khamenei, without mentioning Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karrubi, described their reaction to the results of the 2009 presidential election as "ungracious." The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic stated in a meeting with members of the fourth Assembly of Experts that "unlike the ungracious behavior of those who did not win in 2009 and created turmoil for the country, causing costs and tempting the enemy, in this election, those who did not win congratulated the election winner." Shortly after these remarks by Ali Khamenei, Mehdi Karrubi wrote a letter to Hassan Rouhani asking him to prepare the grounds for his public trial so he could present evidence to reveal who the "ungracious" party is. In his letter, Mehdi Karrubi stated that he has "neither asked for the lifting of house arrest from Hassan Rouhani nor considers it within his authority." He added that "I ask you to request the oppressive regime to establish my public trial so that I can inform the public of my evidence regarding the rigging of the 2005 presidential election, the engineering of the 2009 presidential election, and what has happened to the children of this country in legal and illegal detention centers." Mr. Karrubi, without directly referencing Ali Khamenei's remarks, added: "The outcome of this trial will clarify who has turned back from the revolution and is ungracious, and who continues the path of the revolution and is gracious, among the parties involved in the 2009 election dispute." According to Khabar Online, Mohammad Taqi Karrubi also stated that "the house arrest continues as before" and that "there has been no change" in his father's situation, "neither has the situation improved nor worsened." Mir Hossein Mousavi, Mehdi Karrubi, and Zahra Rahnavard have been under house arrest since February 2011, and efforts to lift their house arrest have so far been unsuccessful. On Wednesday, 70 academic figures residing in the United States and Canada wrote a letter to Hassan Rouhani protesting the "silence and indifference" regarding the "illegal" house arrest of Mousavi, Rahnavard, and Karrubi. They wrote to Rouhani that as long as "effective steps are not taken to resolve this issue, the international community cannot affirm your government's determination to implement internal reforms." These academic figures also requested Hassan Rouhani to at least prepare the grounds for the trial of the accused in a competent public court. During the 2013 election campaign, Hassan Rouhani repeatedly promised, directly and indirectly, to lift the house arrest of the Green Movement leaders if he attained the presidency, a promise that has yet to be fulfilled three years later.
