Mohseni Ejei: The Supreme National Security Council Did Not Make Any New Decisions Regarding House Arrest

Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, the spokesperson for the judiciary, on Monday, September 4, clarified his remarks regarding the topic of "house arrest" for the leaders of the protests against the 2009 election results during the recent meeting of the Supreme National Security Council, stating that no new decisions were made on this matter, and "the house arrest remains in effect." Mohseni Ejei mentioned that he was not present at the recent meeting of the Supreme National Security Council but had heard that this topic was not on the agenda but was discussed, and it was decided that the house arrest would remain in place. According to Mizan, the judiciary spokesperson told reporters on Tuesday: "The topic of house arrest was discussed in the recent meeting of the Supreme National Security Council, no new decisions were made, and the house arrest remains in effect." He added: "The resolution of the Supreme National Security Council is legal and enforceable, and no one has the right to oppose it." Mir Hossein Mousavi, Zahra Rahnavard, and Mehdi Karroubi have been under house arrest without trial since March 2011. Meanwhile, Mohammad Baqer Nobakht, the government spokesperson, on Tuesday, September 28, reported that the issue of the house arrest of Mir Hossein Mousavi, Zahra Rahnavard, and Mehdi Karroubi was raised in the Supreme National Security Council and expressed hope that with the withdrawal of security forces from the location of Mehdi Karroubi's house arrest, "next steps" would also be taken. Nobakht did not specify these "next steps" regarding Karroubi's hunger strike and the withdrawal of security forces from his home, stating: "The Minister of Intelligence reported that this has happened." The withdrawal of security forces from Mehdi Karroubi's house arrest was one of his two demands during his hunger strike, and although Karroubi's son had reported that the relevant officials had agreed to this matter, Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei two weeks ago called this matter a "complete lie." Ali Motahari, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, had previously stated that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, supports the continuation of the house arrest. Hassan Rouhani, despite promising to lift the house arrest in both the eleventh and twelfth presidential elections, has not been able to fulfill this promise. This comes as participants in his speeches prior to the presidential election on May 29 of this year repeatedly called for an end to the house arrest of Mousavi, Karroubi, and Rahnavard. Additionally, several political and religious figures have also called for an end to the house arrest.
