Mousavi, Rahnavard Slogan / Equality of Women and Men at Rouhani Supporters' Gathering

The gathering of supporters for Hassan Rouhani was held at the 12,000-seat Azadi Stadium, where the slogan 'Ya Hossein, Mir Hossein' could be heard in the early hours of the event. Another slogan that circulated on social media was 'Karroubi and Mousavi must be freed.' Supporters of the Green Movement and families of political prisoners joined Rouhani's supporters at the stadium. Mostafa Tajzadeh, the political deputy of the Ministry of Interior during Mohammad Khatami's presidency, who was arrested in June 2009 and imprisoned for seven years, was present at Azadi Stadium with his wife. Some citizens tweeted asking Rouhani to ensure that this would not be the first and last time women enter Azadi Stadium and urged him to work towards women's presence in sports venues. During the event, after one of the speakers called for gender equality in the next government, attendees shouted: 'Mousavi, Rahnavard / Equality of Women and Men.' Asma Jahangir, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Iran, stated in her first report that discrimination against women continues in the country. Mr. Rouhani has been unsuccessful in pursuing some of his promises made during the 2013 presidential campaign, including lifting the house arrest of Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi.
