Murder of 9 Members of a Ukrainian Family in Russian-Occupied Area

Ukraine reports that a family of nine was shot dead in their home in the city of Volnovakha in the Donetsk region, which is under Russian control. Photos released by Ukrainian officials from the crime scene show the lifeless bodies of the victims, including two young children, lying on their beds amid blood-stained walls. The Ukrainian-backed prosecutor's office in Donetsk stated that the murders occurred after the homeowner refused a group of men in military uniforms' request to vacate his house for use by Russian forces. Russian investigators say two soldiers from Russia's 'Far East' region have been detained in connection with the murders. These soldiers had contracted with the Russian army to serve in Ukraine. The Washington-based 'Institute for the Study of War' reported, citing several Ukrainian sources and one internal Russian source, that forensic evidence indicates the perpetrators of this crime were 'prepared and equipped' and likely part of 'military personnel.' The think tank stated: 'Attacking civilians during wartime away from active combat zones is a clear violation of international law and likely falls under the category of war crimes or crimes against humanity.' The city of Volnovakha was occupied by Russian forces shortly after the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in March 2022. Pro-Russian separatists in Donetsk and the adjacent Luhansk region seized government buildings in 2014 and declared these areas as independent 'people's republics.' Following this action, Crimea was annexed by Russia. Russian forces have launched a new offensive operation around the city of Bakhmut, particularly near the strategic city of Avdiivka. Ukraine began its counteroffensive operations in June with the aim of reclaiming occupied territories and regaining the initiative in the full-scale Russian invasion; however, it has only managed to reclaim several hundred square kilometers of its territory so far.
