Muslim Woman in Hijab Featured in Playboy Magazine

The hijab, a covering prescribed for women in Islam, is often associated with concepts such as self-restraint, piety, modesty, and not drawing attention, especially from the opposite sex. However, a Muslim woman has now stated that she is willing to break common stereotypes by having her hijab-clad images published in Playboy magazine. Noor Tagouri is the first woman to appear fully covered with a hijab in a special edition of "Playboy." Playboy is a monthly adult magazine published in the United States since 1953. Although it features political, social, sports, fashion articles, etc., its main claim to fame has been the publication of nude images of women. Recently, the magazine has shifted its focus more towards articles and general writings. According to the Independent, Noor Tagouri, a 22-year-old Libyan-American journalist, along with Stevia, a sexual rights activist, and Ali Wong, a Filipino-American comedian, are among those whose photos will be published in the October issue of Playboy. This special issue, titled "Apostates," introduces eight women and men who "are not afraid to break the rules." Tagouri's actions have faced opposition from individuals who accuse her of collaborating with a magazine that "objectifies women's bodies" and aims to "entertain heterosexual men." However, Noor responded on her website, stating: "I did something that is not easy for many women who have inspiring messages for others." She believes that even the definition of a woman's "success" is determined not by herself but by society. According to Allure, Tagouri was the first hijab-wearing woman to appear on the Newsy television network. In 2015, she spoke at a TEDx event about her reasons for choosing the hijab as her form of dress.
