Muslims Show Solidarity with Christians During Sunday Prayers in France and Italy

Hundreds of Muslims in France and Italy participated in Sunday prayer services to express sympathy and solidarity with Christians in these countries. This action was a response to the attack last Tuesday, where two radical Muslim youths killed an 84-year-old priest in a church in the city of Rouen, located in the "Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray" area in northern France. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack. The participation of Muslims in the Sunday prayer services was welcomed by French Christians. French Christian leaders praised this action by Muslims, calling it a step towards greater solidarity among citizens of the country. During the ceremony at the church in Rouen, the bishop stated that the presence of Muslims emphasized a rejection of any form of murder and violence in the name of God. The Muslim imam of Nice also remarked at a similar event that unity and solidarity are responses to horrific and inhumane acts. On Sunday, in addition to Rouen, a special ceremony was held at the famous Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. Furthermore, in cities such as Rome, Milan, Naples, Palermo, and Sicily in Italy, several Muslims expressed their condolences to Christians by attending Sunday prayer services. The attack in Rouen, which resulted in the murder of the French priest, faced global condemnation, and leaders of various religions in France, during a meeting with President François Hollande, expressed their sympathy for the French people and called for increased cooperation to combat any form of extremism. In recent months, several cities in Europe, especially Paris, Nice, and Brussels, have witnessed deadly operations by supporters of the Islamic State group against ordinary citizens. These attacks have elicited strong reactions from Muslim leaders in these countries and many Muslim-majority nations, while on the other hand, some right-wing groups in European countries have called for tighter control over Muslims and restrictions on the influx of refugees into Europe. In this context, deadly attacks in Western Europe since 2014 have included the beheading of a French priest and a Syrian child. The identity of one of the attackers at a church in northern France was announced as 19-year-old Adel Kermiche. Hollande stated that the threat posed by Islamist militants to Europe has never been as dangerous as it is today.
