Nahid Taghavi 'Arbitrarily' Returned to Evin Prison

Maryam Kalaran, Nahid Taghavi's daughter, reported on Thursday, March 1, that her mother was arbitrarily returned to Evin Prison in Tehran without any clear reason. In a statement published on Ms. Kalaran's account on the social media platform 'X', it was noted that Nahid Taghavi, a 69-year-old dual German-Iranian political prisoner, was returned to Evin Prison on the evening of Wednesday, March 1. She mentioned that her mother had been released on medical leave with an electronic bracelet on January 8 of this year, but during this time, necessary medical care was almost impossible as she was not allowed to go beyond a 1,000-meter radius from her apartment. Maryam Kalaran added that in recent weeks, Nahid Taghavi's eyes had developed a painful condition and required serious medical care. Additionally, previous reports indicated that Ms. Taghavi also suffered from severe joint pain, spinal issues, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Ms. Kalaran emphasized that the Islamic Republic of Iran and its judicial system are responsible for everything that happens to her mother and wrote: 'I urge all freedom lovers to be the voice of my mother and all political prisoners.' Nahid Taghavi was arrested by the Islamic Republic's security forces in October 2020 and spent 220 days in solitary confinement in the IRGC's Ward 2-A. Until January 2022, she was deprived of access to a specialist doctor, and the mobility of her 'fingers' had decreased. Maryam Kalaran discussed the details of her mother's medical leave with Voice of America, stating that Germany has adopted a 'diplomacy of silence' regarding the Islamic Republic. There have been discussions between the foreign ministers of Germany and the Islamic Republic about the fate of German prisoners in Iran. The European Parliament has called for the Islamic Republic to end 'discrimination against women and girls' and 'hostage diplomacy.'
