Nahid Taghavi, Iranian-German Citizen Imprisoned in Evin, Temporarily Released Again

Maryam Klarin, daughter of Nahid Taghavi, a dual-national prisoner, states that her mother has been temporarily released from Evin Prison with an electronic ankle bracelet. On Monday, October 1st, she emphasized in a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that her mother is only allowed to move within a 'one-kilometer' radius with this ankle bracelet, which was effective from Saturday, September 30th. This Iranian-German dual-national prisoner had previously been released on medical leave from prison on January 8, 2023, but was returned to Evin Prison ahead of schedule on February 28. Maryam Klarin had previously referred to her mother's temporary release conditions as 'house arrest' and emphasized that medical care for this political prisoner during her temporary release was 'almost impossible' due to the restrictions of the ankle bracelet. Despite multiple illnesses, Ms. Taghavi was deprived of access to medical services in prison, and Evin Prison officials had long refused to grant her medical leave. She was first able to leave prison on medical leave in July 2022 but was forced to return in November of the same year, after which tensions in Iran-Germany relations escalated. Nahid Taghavi, a 67-year-old dual-national Iranian-German citizen, was arrested by the IRGC intelligence in October 2020 and sentenced to 10 years and 8 months in prison by the Revolutionary Court for participating in an illegal group after seven months of solitary confinement and interrogation. The Islamic Republic of Iran is accused of exerting pressure on foreign governments by illegally detaining or 'taking hostage' foreign nationals, including dual citizens, to achieve its demands.
